A report on my studies at the University of Damascus 2003 - 2004

Information for students interested in studying the Arabic language in Damascus, especially at the Language Centre, University of Damascus. Information as of October 2004. (Check part of June 2005), otherwise indicated.

Since not everyone has the same interests Arabic students, I refer in this review can often on sites where more information can be found. To give a more nuanced impression of the country, I've also included some relatively irrelevant "anecdotes."

principle is to enter on a tourist visa. This can be extended either on site or be converted into a residence permit (Iquama). The tourist visa is easily available by post from the Syrian Embassy in Berlin within a few days. (Form can be downloaded at www.syrianembassy.de).

course, the passport may not indicate a stay in Israel to be present and the question on the visa application, whether "ever in occupied Palestine was "in the negative must. If the passport" guidelines "(Egyptian or Jordanian stamps a border with Israel, or even Israeli stamp) on a visit to Israel is, you do not have his passport to" lose "to get a new passport. The city office seen problems of this kind very understanding and, at the request (informally, giving reasons) a new passport.

The validity of the visa (three or six months), the possible entry period ("entry window"). 30 days after of entry must either have the training and re-entry (for a multiple entry visa) or be carried for a visa (single entry and multiple entry) extended (tourist status) or be converted into a residence permit (Iquama). The entry stamp but says that they should be reported within 15 days of the entry of the "Surete Generale," but this must be taken only after a month. The scheme is new but the stamp, not yet. The note, which you fill in the entry, must be presented upon departure, or does the failure to observe the rule a "fee" of 100 SYP.

What a Iquama or a visa extension is exactly and how to get it and what is to be observed, see "Iquama" or "extension of visa".

introduction to the study of Arabic language in Damascus

Syria is basically a country like any other. Everything will work, but not necessarily as how it intends to do or how you have heard that it is dysfunctional. Therefore not be surprised if something does not work the way it is described here. It will reach its target in any case, even if the target was adjusted in the course of achieving the conditions.

To study the Arabic language in Damascus may be due to the relatively small administrative burden and decide very quickly. There are pre-departure (as opposed to the Erasmus or Socrates programs), virtually no administrative preparations required. Decision, flights, visa and health insurance (for the case), more is not really required before departure. To study at the university prior contact neither necessary nor possible. The receipt of the visa and to renew or transfer to a residence permit is relatively easy.

Even the daily test consists Syria: Unlike other Arab countries, it is possible for example a newspaper successfully in a public park to read without constantly interrupted and surrounded by a crowd of children to be. Syrians are fundamentally honest. Thus, for example, live in the "prefabricated houses Berzeh" or eat the cookies "Technical and Co. for Food and Chemical Industries". Graffiti is very rare.

The cost of living in Syria, despite tuition fees low. Damascus is one of the most prestigious places of the to learn Arabic language and offers many opportunities for study. This reputation is based on the will and the ability of the Syrians with foreigners Fusha (standard language) to speak. In her claim that the Syrian Ammiya (conversational) JURISDICTION near the Fusha, it is my opinion, a rumor. This may indeed be the case relatively (compared to eg the Ammiya Egypt or even the Maghreb countries), but surely not objective. Not only the dialect is miles away from the high-level language, it differs significantly not only between the cities of Syria but even between different parts of the city Damascus.

Who concerns because of the "security situation" in Damascus has, whether in general or because of the perception of Syria as a "rogue state", or who must reassure friends and relatives, I recommend a look at the Rurik "Safety" on the sides of the Foreign Office (www.auswaertiges-amt.de). One can feel at any time, day or night anywhere completely safe. Also had neither the Israeli air attack on a village near Damascus (Ain Al Sahib) in the fall of 2003 nor the attempt on the life of a Hamas leader in a refugee camp in the summer of 2004 AlZahara an impact on daily life. Because of the close cohesion between the foreigners, I was informed within hours of this new development. Neither

information on Syria and are specifically about the study of Arabic language in Damascus to find and often outdated or simply wrong.

The Foreign Office (www.auswaertiges-amt.de) provides the address of the Syrian Embassy in Berlin, the latest visa information, travel information and a link to the German embassy in Damascus. This (www.deutschebotschaft-damaskus.org) offers a map of the embassy, opening times and a (incomplete) address list of Arabic language courses in Syria. Several institutions offer

the Arabic courses (including IFEAD / IFPO) and the foreign cultural centers (Goethe Institute, Centre Culturel Francais, British Council, American Cultural Center, Instituto Cervantes, ...), are also available on the Internet. Left these institutions can be found in the list the Arabic language courses.

The Thorntree forum for discussion at www.lonelyplanet.com (link "Thorntree") offers in the sections "Middle East" and "Speaking in tongues" regular discussion articles on interesting and current information. It is possible to ask ourselves questions, search the website for relevant information and connect directly with other participants in contact.

On www.oanda.com to find current exchange rates. However, the official exchange rate of the Syrian lira (SYP) inside Syria's better than the website stated. The dollar rate is fairly constant at 1 USD = 51.5 SYP. The Euro-Syrian pound rate then depends on the current € - U.S. $ exchange rate from.

Also found in guidebooks about Syria in general and for language courses in particular. I recommend the Rough Guide or Footprint (both English).

1.2 Syria:

The tourist office north of Sahat Yussef al Azmeh (near the Cham Palace Hotel) offers free maps and maps of Damascus of Syria. Good for a first orientation. This map shows all the cultural centers, embassies and ministries, but not the colloquial names of all places.

detailed maps of Greater Damascus (similar to that posted at the bus stops) or any other area of Syria are in a stationery store between Martyrs Square and Jisr al Victoria (near the Ural @ internet cafes and the Iranian Cultural Center, across from the unfinished building) available.

Hotel in Souq Al Haramein Sarouja (between Victoria and Jisr al Jisr al Thauwra) is usually the first port of call for foreigners in Syria. This hotel can arrange many things (car, apartment, ...) and often knows the answers to tricky questions. be

The various foreign cultural centers (see above) and the institutions offering Arabic courses can also valuable sources of information, be it through friends that one of the various events or in the library meets.

arrival from Germany to Syria

(Information as of June 2005)

direct

direct flights to Syria are expensive, because Syria is not at the center of the world but at its edge. Eastern European airlines such as Tarom (Romana Air Transport) often have good offers. Most Beirut, Damascus, Amman and Cairo are the same "tariff zone" and therefore jaw flights cost the same as direct flights (the small price difference results from the different high airport taxes) (see 1.3 of Egypt "). This means that eg a flight Munich - Damascus and Amman - Munich is as expensive as Munich - Damascus - Munich (both via the hub airline).

runs a shuttle bus from the airport for 25 SYP to Baramkeh (about 6:00 to about 24:00 Clock). The official price for a taxi to the center is 340 SYP. Most taxi drivers are, especially at night, however, require 500 SYP. The departure by plane costs a departure tax of 200 SYP. The revenue stamp is at the airport right before the security check available.

1.1 via Turkey

For longer stays, the arrival of Turkey also save money and allow for a longer stay in Syria, a flexible return. By combining two one-way flights can also be two different airlines combine (and their possible special offers). Also a tour of the region is possible, for example by combining an outward flight to Turkey with a visit to Syria, the onward journey to Egypt and a return flight from Egypt to Germany. But one should be enough time but be able to view everything in peace.

German Wings (www.germanwings.com) flies from Stuttgart and Cologne from € 19 one way including taxes and fees to Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen (a "Ryanair Airport", ie, "something outside"). This promotion is available only at certain times (about once per month, exact date will be Newsletter called the booking is only possible on the internet). What is new is the combination of Berlin (and possibly Cologne) to Ankara Esenboga Airport. This shortens the journey to Syria at around six hours compared to Istanbul.

Germania Express (www.gexx.de) flew from Hamburg, Berlin and Munich at a fixed price of 99 € one way to Istanbul Ataturk. By now (June 2005) Germania Express by Deutsche BA (www.flydba.de) purchased and given up the route to Istanbul. Perhaps taking this route but dba again.

Air Berlin (www.air-berlin.de) flies from many German airports in tourist resorts in Turkey, mostly on the south coast. It is important that we at the ones listed here can book companies that are actually charter plane, even one-way flights and stays over 28 days. Condor (www.condor.de) and Hapag Lloyd (www.hapagfly.de) also fly from Germany to holiday resorts in Turkey.

for the Ruhr and Cologne are the properties of Correndon (www.Correndon.com) and Jetonly (www.jetonly.com) interesting. Correndon flies from the Netherlands for some money to Istanbul and Jetonly of Brussels and Liege / Liege in the holiday resorts of Turkey. Jetonly the Belgian carrier in the TUI.

Even traditional airlines (Lufthansa) often have incredible deals in Turkey, they are in summer (Hochsaison!) but quickly sold out.

From Istanbul Ataturk (IST) the subway to City Centre (Aksaray) and Esenler Otogar. Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen (SBW) drives a bus for about 5 € Havaş to Taksim and other city parts. Exact times are on the Havaş site, there is a bus every flight

from Istanbul takes the bus to Hatay (Antakya =) to Damascus at least 24 hours and costs about $ 30. It is recommended that two separate bus tickets (Istanbul - Hatay, Hatay - Damascus) instead of through tickets to buy, so you're flexible and not dependent on a bus company. The Turkish bus ticket you can easily spot in Turkey buy (either at the bus station or at the City Office of the bus company).

interesting for the trip to Istanbul is the Harem bus station on the Asian side of the Bosphorus (ferry from Eminonu / Sirkeci to Harem) instead of the Esenler Otogar (with metro station, but on the European side) since the former reduces the travel time a bit. The taxi from the bus station in Damascus Harasta center costs more than 50 SYP, not 100 SYP! (Syrian taxis have a taximeter should use the well). Alternatively, the service Karajat - Mezzeh "take Jisr Al Thauwra for 5 SYP.

Alternatively, you can also Onur Air (www.onurair.com.tr, problems with the English Website may www.hemenbilet.com try to fly) for about 46 € within Turkey from Istanbul to Adana and shorten the bus ride. The Turkish air transport was liberalized in December 2003.

It also runs a train once a week (with 2 sleeper) from Istanbul to Aleppo to Damascus. (Details at www.maninseat61.com or http://www.tcdd.gov.tr/tcdding/ortadogu_ing.htm.) The price in the sleeping car is about $ 50, from Istanbul Haydarapasa (Asian side, ferry from Eminonu / Sirkeci) Sunday morning 8:55 and 10:00 clock Clock from Aleppo last week. The journey takes about 36 hours. The train is much more comfortable than the bus and the bus preferable if you want to travel on those days. Information on how to get me to find the train from Germany for railway fans is also the Man in Seat 61st

If you like bus can travel the entire route from Germany to Damascus on the bus. Varan (www.varan.com.tr) runs from Bregenz, Linz / Vienna to Istanbul and from there as to Adana. Euro Lines (www.eurolines.com) travels from all over Germany to Turkey. Flying is probably more comfortable and faster, but usually cheaper.

1.2 on Lebanon

Beirut, Damascus or Amman as well as an expensive airport. LTU (www.ltu.de) flies from Dusseldorf to Beirut recently, and could also cost Prices than traditional scheduled airlines. Apparently you can fly one-way only from Dusseldorf to Beirut, but not vice versa.

1.3 over Egypt

This option is only interesting if you want to combine a (tourist) stay in Egypt with an Arabic Studies in Damascus and two one-way cheap flights (eg back to Turkey, returned from Egypt) or studying Arabic in Damascus and Cairo wants. (Hint: http://cairo.daad.de)

Note 1: scheduled airlines consider Damascus and Cairo (as well as Amman and Beirut) than the same "tariff zone", so jaw flights usually cost the same as direct flights. However, airlines have scheduled one-way flights dearly.

Note 2: If the trip to Egypt is not the ferry from Aqaba to Nuweiba (Information: www.arabmaritimebridge.com or www.jordanjubilee.com) or by plane but on Israel / Palestine, one must also be aware that this from Syria should not and you have to inform going beyond this report from other sources. There

Currently there are only three (charter) airlines to allow one-way flights that begin in Egypt (but not on all connections), since these flights are subject to a variety of arrangements. These rules can change over the short term and liberalize the market.

Condor (www.condor.de) (three-digit flight numbers) flies from resorts such as Sharm el Sheikh, Hurghada and Luxor to Germany.

Hapag Lloyd (www.hapagfly.de) flies from Cairo to Munich (not from Sharm el Sheikh, Hurghada and Luxor). (Now merged into tuifly.de)

Jetonly (www.jetonly.com) (Belgian TUI) flies from Cairo to Brussels (interesting for the Ruhr). (Now merged into tuifly.de)

One way (charter) starting in Germany are joining what is possible with the above mentioned companies as well as Air Berlin (www.airberlin.de).

These regulations but could change at short notice and liberalize the market.

One way (charter) starting in Germany are joining what is possible with the above mentioned companies as well as Air Berlin (www.airberlin.de).

living in Damascus

The first night will be probably in the hotel in the Souq Al Haramein Sarouja spend. If this is full of the Al Rabie recommends next door. In Bab Touma

rent Syria, mostly Christian family room with more or less family connection for about 5000 SYP per month (about 100 USD). It is more a paying "guest" as part of a "host family". The level of integration in the family depends of course on the family, length of stay and one's own efforts. Many families barely speak Fusha. Visiting Syrian friends are usually not possible. Visits by foreigners of the opposite sex usually do not attract attention. A room in Bab Touma is the easiest way to find accommodation. The room search proved relatively easy. Most of the "Uncle Ahmed shops" (in Ahnlehnung to "corner shop", only smaller) can show you the way to landlords. Otherwise, foreign friends a good source. Also the hotel provides room in Bab Al Haramein Touma, but it takes a commission from the landlord. Most foreigners live for a time in Bab Touma before they move into a flat in another part of town. Some landlords are very good at business and pay the rental income of foreigners to their daughter a nose job.

Supplement Summer 2004: Meanwhile, many landlords require 6000 SYP per month, about 100 EUR. In that more and more popular to Damascus Language acquisition can not be excluded housing shortages in the summer months.

A residential community that allows foreigners to be pure or mixed with WG Syrian students a more free and uncontrolled life as in Bab Touma. A residential community with Syrian students, gives insights into the Syrian society and facilitate the language acquisition of both parties. This is accompanied by an extension of acting skills, if the meaning of unknown words is explained. Sexually mixed WGs are usually possible, this depends both on the landlord and the city district. Either climb an existing WG or starting a. The apartment search can be frustrating be. In college, there is no bulletin board with flat displays, such as we are used to from Germany. We find homes mostly on hearsay or by asking in shops in the district or required notices in the cultural centers (especially the French). Some free-ad papers publish housing ads. Otherwise, only the broker remains in the desired neighborhood, including its lush Commission. The level of commission is negotiable!

It is practically possible (but not officially) to live in student accommodation in Mezzeh. You live very close to the university, has very close contact with Syrian students and pay a very low rent, but omitted on comfort, privacy and sleep. This option requires some stamina to get permission to find the competent authorities first and then convince them of this project.

note should whether a machine is available, whether and how the shower and the rooms are heated (the winters are very cold) and whether the rent for several months must be paid in advance and at what additional costs (eg oil in the winter for the oven). In addition, the landlord for the exact address will be interviewed (many cases is not clear), so that they can specify the "Wezira Hejra including al Jawwazaat" for the Iquama or extend the visa. I've never police (at the police station Report of the neighborhood), need only at the immigration office ("Wezira Hejra including al Jawwazaat").

communication between Germany and Syria

1.0 Internet: Internet cafes are

throughout the city. There are significant price differences (between 35 SYP and 100 SYP per hour, outside Bab Touma usually cheaper). With a membership card using the Internet is cheaper than without. The connection is usually slow, sometimes it is impossible to use because either the Internet or the power fails completely, or the connection constantly broken. Hotmail and Yahoo Mail are officially banned. Therefore, it is advisable to transfer and / or an alternate email address set. Internet Cafes find a way around the prohibition on use. However, this connection is even slower. Web.de is no longer in contrast to 2001, prohibited. If you have a private telephone line, Internet access is possible from home (45 SYP per hour). In contrast to 2000, very few sites are prohibited. It is even possible Israeli newspapers read online.

Despite the new freedom, one should be aware that all Internet traffic goes through a central server of the government and this so is able to sniff each e-mail or run to "shoulder surfing". The same applies of course also for telephone and mail.

'''internet at home''' (as August 2007)

It is possible to go "home" to the Internet via dial up, provided you have a (working) fixed line. To this end,''scratch cards / dial up cards / prepaid internet access cards''are sold on which one must be free to scratch a secret number. With the help of a free access number can go as over the fixed network online. 16 hours internet cost 300 Syp / $ 6, which is less than 20 SYP (30 euro cents) per hour. Several companies, including "aya", "e-LCOM", "aloola" and "sawa" offer this service.

DSL is theoretically possible, but seems to get difficult, partly because demand exceeds supply.

1.1 VoIP

Voice over IP (Internet telephony) offer the most Internet cafes. Thus it is possible (almost) every port around the world to call for a small fee. This phone is by far the least expensive way home. However, privacy on the Internet Cafe is not assured.

2.0

The phone lines (fixed and mobile, innersyrisch or abroad) are often overloaded and the long queues at the phone booths. The mobile communication is growing faster than the mobile network.

2.1 Hard Power

from Germany to Syria, it is cheaper than from Syria to Germany. exist between the individual carriers significant price differences (you can www.billiger-telefonieren.de). You can have calls returned in the Syrian cell phone, the number is in the phone booth.

There are phone cards with chip and chip without (Hello Syria, with access code and PIN) (both around 500 SYP, available at Uncle Ahmed). Phone cards with chip allow a more reliable connection than phone cards with PIN numbers, as can be overloaded with the card without a chip, both the telephone network and the computer Hello Syria. For this you can use the card without a chip from any phone and can call from home, without incurring the additional costs or the phone for long distance calls or mobile phones are unlocked. (Most landline phones are not enabled for wireless connections or international calls). For calls in the home but is VoIP (Internet telephony) is much cheaper than any phone card.

2.2 mobile network

The technical standard for mobile phones in Syria is the same as in Germany. German phones work in Syria. Mobile phone contract with a German work in part and not in part. Sometimes you can send SMS but not received or received but not send or neither, or both. Have to try to spot. The information from the German mobile phone company are not very helpful. In some cases, different SIM cards the same contract the same German telephone company of different things (not). Syria has a cell phone network only since mid-2000. The end of the mobile-free society was inaugurated in 2003 by massive price cuts. Many camera phones show a picture of the president.

You can buy a Syrian pre-paid card or get a normal contract. Mobile - mobile is cheaper than mobile - fixed. The two mobile companies called Syriatel and Spacetel Syria. There are no competition or price differences between these two companies - the main difference is the color in advertising, one is green the other red. Arabic text messages is thus also possible of course. German Chargers work with Syrian outlets (like plug, same voltage and Hertz). If the plug does not fit, buy an extension cord, then it fits.

Costs: The connection fee for the SIM-card is only about 600 SYP (about 10 €) comes to a monthly basic fee (including airtime) from about 1000 SYP (20USD). This is a huge price drop of about 1000usd connection fee in 2001 to 300 USD in early 2003.

3.0

The letter mail communication to and from Syria prepares much fun unless you have access to a mailbox.

3.1 mailbox

The German Embassy offers a deposit (1500 SYP) and a Mietbeteiligung (100 - 200 SYP) a mailbox for foreign students (your name, PO Box 844, Damascus). As there is no reliable mail carrier nor a generally accepted system of street addresses, this is the most reliable and fastest way to receive mail. Letters that were sent to my street address came not reliable. Outgoing letters are placed in the main post office near the Hejaz railway station.

DHL DHL maintains offices in the center behind the Semiramis Hotel (Victoria Jisr al) and in the City Mall Mezzeh.

Arabic Language Courses in Damascus

I completed several levels at the University 2003-2004 and in the past two arabesque courses attended. On the other institutions, I can only report second hand. If interested, promotes a web search out information (but often out of date), maybe even a website set up time between the institutions. The majority of postal addresses can be found under "Arabic-language courses in Syria," the [http://www.damaskus.diplo.de German Embassy in Damascus].

Basically, there are full-time study opportunities (ie, year-round continuous Courses and usually oriented theory of language) and directed "tasters" (ie, teaching for a few months a year and generally speaking practice). The latter are ideal for entry or to complement a "full time" school year in Syria, or to "feel" if you even pleasure in the study of Arabic language is and whether Syria is the right country for it. Many students of Arabic (including myself) put before the beginning of Arabic studies in Germany such a "taster" field. This one has a completely different approach to language and culture than by a sole university in Germany would be possible.

with at every institution except the IFEAD the study can proceed without Arabischvorkenntnisse. At every institution except the University of Damascus is in the enrollment of Germany. You may have to enroll on site is possible on an individual basis.

principle is still drawn to the possibility of individual course (from 250 SYP per hour) and tandem (language exchange, both help each other in learning the language of the other). Language tandems, the Goethe Institute to arrange, but usually it is directly from Arab students who wish to addressed, such as the Language Centre of the University of Damascus (same building as the University Arabic Course). Of course are very many possible combinations possible, not only Arabic - German.

1.1 Public universities Damascus

The Language Centre of the University of Damascus offers many other languages (French, Italian, English, Russian, English) foreign one to the mastery of the intricacies (some said hair-splitting) of Arabic grammar be aimed Arabic course. Instruction is exclusively in Fusha and the texts in contrast to earlier no longer ideologically influenced. The richly erudite vocabulary covers all areas of life.

There are several levels of teaching which take a month, from beginner to expert. The placement test, plus monthly tests reflect my performance level correctly again. The lessons and the tests consist of grammar, reading comprehension, listening comprehension and discussion (or one call in the test).

class is five days a week, Sunday through Thursday from 9:00 to 13:00 clock. The class size varies between 15 - 20 students. High religious holidays (Muslim + Christian) and secular holidays are no classes. Students come from all over the world and have some widely divergent world views, which is reflected primarily in the discussions. Often the only language of communication among each other in Arabic. are made from the third level education has an essay in Arabic to a user selected subject.

Each month course costs 10 000 SYP (about 200 USD). The last two courses a little more cost (currently 12 000 SYP for the penultimate and last for 15 000 SYP), but have also substantially lower class sizes. Despite the massive price increase in recent (2002 cost the three-month rate 6 000 SYP, 2003, the two-month course 10 000 SYP), the University of Damascus is still one of the lowest priced options in Arabic Arabic World to learn.

The courses start in the beginning of each calendar month. Enrolment takes place in the last one to two weeks of the previous month. Prior contact with the University is neither possible nor necessary. All my attempts to contact (e-mail, fax, phone, mail) have failed. Those who still want to try: asp_sy@hotmail.com, Fax: 00963-11-2120164, Tel: 00963-11-2129494. An entry is possible at any rate, the classification in the appropriate price level is via a placement test. The university has now a website: http://www.damasuniv.shern.net/arabic/li/site-en/index.htm is the website of the Language Centre of the University of Damascus, or general: www.damasuniv.edu.sy

The University is spread geographically roughly on Baramkeh (law, fine arts, education, WiWi) and Mezzeh Adab (literature, languages, medicine). You take a taxi or a service (eg Jaubr - Mezzeh Autostrad or Karajat - Mezzeh of Jisr as Thauwra or Jisr al Ra'is or AlDauwar of Bab al Janubi Sharqui). Proper stop 'nafaq al Adab, Autostrad Mezzeh. After you went through the tunnel (= nafaq), it is the first round building on the right (sign in English: "Language Centre" and in Arabic: "Merkaz ta'alim alLurraat) The proper office is located in. ground floor near the entrance.
There is
told a detail which is necessary for enrollment. In my case, were the 10 000 SYP, some passport photos, a copy of information page of the passport and a letter of the message. The letter is free of charge for German students at the University of Damascus. In addition, a form must be completed in English. Those who wish to Iquama, a form gets to the "Wezira Hejra including alJauwazaat in Baramkeh and one for the" Merkaz Fahaza al AIDS in Zabladani (AIDS test for Iquama). All in all, pretty easy and after a few days you have done all the bureaucratic processes.

1.2 IFEAD / IFPO (Institut Francais d'Etudes Arabes Damas a / Institut Francais du Proche Orient)

Definitely the best location for a study of Arabic, roughly comparable with the LSI Bochum (National Language Institute). Excellent teaching. Registration is usually from Germany, in individual cases on the ground. More information at: www.ifead.org

01.03 Arabic Institute for Foreigners

money in Syria

used to have all the money you need in cash or traveler's check or take in Lebanon get at the ATM replenishment. A Syrian Pound (SYP) is relatively stable at 51.50 SYP to the U.S. dollar. The euro exchange rate fluctuates in relation to the euro-dollar exchange rate. Inflation is negligible.

Since spring 2003, there are cash machines that are connected to international payment systems. Cirrus (= Maestro in Germany, blue and red circle on the reverse of the card) is one of the accepted systems. ATMs are located at the airport, near the Cham Palace Hotel (Youssef Al Azmeh Square) and in the City Mall in Mezzeh. Of ATMs in Lebanon alongside Lebanese lira you can withdraw and U.S. dollars. Validity of the bank card note, for the like you can not nachschicken to Syria (see letter communication).

cash is exchanged at the branches of the Central Bank of Syra (CBS). The main branch at Al Youssef Azmeh Square changes traveler's checks (also € travelers checks, even if the German bank has a different opinion). Other branches are located at the Hejaz railway station and at the Bab Sharqui near Bab Touma. The black market usually offers lower rates than the CBS.

Western Union Money Transfer is cooperating with the CBS.

The cost of living in Syria are relatively low. I spent a month on average 400 U.S. dollars (rent 100 USD, 100 USD tuition fees, are free 200 USD). Since the tuition fees have the university in the summer of 2004 doubled the amount rises to around U.S. $ 100 per month $ 500.

Activities in Syria

for a life in addition to the study of Arabic. Although the cultural and non cultural offerings may not live up to the level of Cairo and Beirut, it is still rarely boring. The cultural institutes organize cultural events (exhibitions, cinema, concerts ...) and maintain a library in the local language. Details of the program and any invitations are available at the reception of the respective cultural institutions.

addition, offer trips and excursions to tourist sites in Syria and neighboring countries. In summer, Swimming pool visits, and in winter skiing in Lebanon. Health in Syria

Drinking water in Syria is easily drinkable. Health insurance and do not forget to ask vaccinations against typhoid, polio, tetanus, hepatitis A. possibly doctor. Do not be alarmed, as in the information note of the doctor there was malaria in Syria. This information is correct. But if one reads precisely because that malaria is only at certain seasons in the Jezira (between the Euphrates and Tigris = Deir Ez Zoor and Quamishle) occurs. Doctors are paid in cash in Syria and you get a receipt for the German health insurance.

The content of this blog was originally located here: http://arabischindamaskus.acc.de/arabischindamaskus / index.php / home

Since acc.de but unfortunately never worked reliably (was offline from time to time like, just like that), the service was mysterious, you had to register every three months so that the website was online and have then taken hold even spammers / vandals acc.de there I turned back and posted the content here as a blog. In addition, the original wiki idea does not work at, for it has never used someone that function.
